FUE-Follicular Unit Extraction

Follicular unit extraction, referred simply as FUE, is a method of hair transplant surgery that manually removes individual hair follicles from the patient’s scalp. After extraction, the hairs are implanted to bald or thinning areas around the head.

Follicular unit extraction is a method used for hair transplants to give patients with balding or thinning hair a naturally thicker appearance. Unlike more invasive methods such as follicular unit transplantation, or FUT, this method does not require the removal of a donor strip of scalp to extract individual follicles. Also doesn’t leave scarring. The FUE technique is performed manually, from extraction to implantation, by our own Hair Transplant Specialist and her team. Newer methods such as Micro FUE, automatizes parts of the FUE procedure for quicker treatments and less error.

Before the extraction of the follicles begins, the scalp is first shaved, to provide the doctor with better visualization, this way we prevent over-harvest of the areas. The donor area is then cleansed and anesthetized with a local anesthetic. During the procedure, one of two extraction methods is used: manual punch or micro motor. The manual punch technique uses a dull tip that is less likely to transect the follicles and the tip guides the follicles into the lumen of the punch. This allows for a deeper level of dissection, thereby decreasing manipulation and the force needed for graft extraction. The micro motor technique limits the depth of the punch insertion in order to avoid follicle transection and provides a more consistent graft. Your hair transplant surgeon will decide what technique is best for your individual needs.

Note: In our clinic, we include one Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) session during the hair transplant operation. This will significantly influence the engraftment process ensuring the maximum regrowth result.

During the procedure, 2.000-4.500 grafts are implanted into a particular area on the scalp. Our surgeon will be careful to avoid over-harvesting donor areas so as not to cause the body to experience telogen effluvium, a reversible form of temporary hair loss caused by physical or emotional stress.

Follicular unit extraction seeks to reverse hair loss created by thinning hair, bald spots, and receding hairlines. It leaves no linear scars after the operation, heals quickly and is completely painless.

Recovery Tips

Following the FUE hair transplant surgery, avoid activities that causes excessive sweating such as cardio exercise for at least one month and heavy lifting for at least 60 days. Steam rooms, saunas, and other similar activities should also be avoided. Do not drink any alcohol for at least 1 week after the operation to ensure quick healing. Be cautious, do not touch or comb any areas that received grafts, as they will be sensitive.

Follicular Unit Extraction is not recommended for patients with poor donor sites or who have hair loss as a result of medication intake, stress, or medical treatment as these can be reversed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis and can typically take from four to eight hours. While the procedure is extremely convenient nevertheless there is some discomfort that can be expected. Before the operation takes place, the patient will receive a local anesthetic, and they may feel a slight pricking sensation. Soon afterwards the anesthetic numbs the skin, relieving any sensation throughout the procedure. In terms of recovery, patients may experience tenderness, redness, and mild pain for a few days afterwards and may need to take pain medication (and possibly anti-inflammatory) medication to alleviate infection. However, these are generally mild enough that patients are able to return to work within a day or two, at most. Following post-procedure instructions during the first few weeks of healing will help minimize any discomfort following the hair transplant procedure.

In determining the success rate of hair transplants, it is important to take into account the client’s satisfaction with the procedure as well as the total percentage of the transplanted follicles that were successfully harvested from the donor site and transplanted to the recipient site. Using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy with FUE increases the success of FUE hair transplants. Your hair will begin to grow 3 to 4 months after the operation, and final results up to 1 year. With an experienced surgeon and ideal candidacy, the survival rate could reach up to 95%.

Hair transplantation operation can only be done under the supervision of a doctor. Since hair transplantation is a long treatment which has more than one phase such as anesthesia, implantation preparation, channel opening, implantation, etc, the doctor constantly checks the hair transplant technicians and participates in the operations if it is needed.

Although most hair transplant procedures harvest donor hairs from the scalp, an increasing number of patients are relying on the use of body hairs to contribute additional grafts beyond what the scalp can provide. The best areas for these donor hairs are the beard followed by the chest and back.

Unlike organ transplants, you are your own donor for a hair transplant. The roots of your hair have live cells and just like all your other cells, you have your own unique genetic code embedded in them. If your body comes across someone else’s genetic code through transplanted hairs, it would cause an intense immune reaction and your body would reject them. You donate your hair from your own donor area.

It’s normal for the transplanted hair to fall out two to three weeks after the procedure. This makes way for new hair growth. Most people will see some amount of new hair growth 3 to 4 months after surgery and final results within 8 months to a year. When performing the hair transplant operation, your surgeon will make sure to extract and implant hair follicles from your donor area that are not affected by hormones which causes makes them fall out.
